No matter how much you drill the proper protocol into someone's head, there are always those who think they've found a shortcut. Team members, DIY enthusiasts, and the ole' house painter – you name it, I've seen it. The newbies on my team rush through tasks, eyeing that 'speed demon' award, while the DIYers treat the prep list like a choose-your-own-adventure book, skipping steps as they please, and of course the house painter...well, he or she has a brush, so why not. But alas, they're mistaken. Our methodology is solid for a reason. Sure, it's as exciting as watching paint dry, but that's where the magic happens!
Just like building a house starts with a solid foundation, a successful cabinet refinishing project begins with thorough preparation (including selecting the right finishing material, designed for cabinet finishing!) That's the refinishing foundation. It's crucial for durability and success. A smooth, level base sets the stage for everything that follows. On the flip side, start with a shaky foundation, and you're looking at a cascade of problems down the line. So, here's my two cents: clean, sand, and clean again, wipe, wipe, wipe. (Please, check out the PROCESS page to see how we do it.) Really scrutinize those surfaces after cleaning. Run your hands over them, feel for any bumps or nicks. Beyond visibly, you should be able to feel grease or food smudges. I've learned to spot even the tiniest flaws, which might seem trivial but trust me, they're not. Ignore them, and they'll come back to haunt you, showing up during priming or, worse, after that first coat of finish. And you really don't want to find out about them from a disappointed homeowner after a finish fails. So do it right the first time, and you will make magic!
